A graduate of the US Military Academy (West Point) and a dual US/British national, Ray has had a highly varied professional career, including: service as an officer in the US Army, banking, IT, publishing and consulting.

  • Head of Global Ship Lending for a leading US bank.
  • Main Board Director for a leading cruise operator.
  • Operated a day ship operating between San Diego, CA and Ensenada, Mexico.
  • Project Manager for a ferry operation between Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo.
  • Project Development Manager for Marine Risk Consulting and Investigations, Oxford.
Ray has lived and worked in the US and Caribbean, Germany, France, Switzerland, Greece and the UK (where he currently resides). He holds a Masters degree in French and German and has a working knowledge of several other European languages. He has published articles in leading trade publications and has spoken at major conferences in Europe and the Middle East.
 
steven jones BSc. (Hons)
A navigation officer in the UK Merchant Navy, Steve served on a number of vessel types, predominantly cable vessels and is a survivor of a piracy attack. Focusing on maritime security, anti-piracy and ISPS compliance, he has worked for a major P&I association, commercial organisations and global professional bodies
  • Ten years sea-going experience on UK-flag cable ships, laying and maintaining submarine cables as well as on bulk carriers, dredgers, and offshore supply and lighthouse tenders.
  • NGO observer with the International Federation of Shipmasters (IFSMA) at IMO conferences on the development and adoption of the ISPS Code.
  • Conducted security assessments and on-site verifications, and produced ship security plans for a range of different vessel types.
  • Consultant on maritime fraud and safety and security management. Lead consultant on elements of the recent "Safemed Project", an initiative of the European Commission under The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC).
  • Worked in numerous committees across the Nautical Institute's international membership, and was charged with shaping numerous policy issues in areas as diverse as Dynamic Positioning (DP) training, membership criteria, career development and maritime security.
  • Assisted in the development of the Warsash Maritime Centre and Marine Impact Ltd ISPS Code courses recognised by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Also involved in production and provision of risk management training courses to P&I club members internationally.
Steve is an industry commentator, publishing numerous books as well as reports and articles in both the maritime and mainstream press. He has been a speaker on numerous occasions to the members of leading P&I Clubs, shipowner associations, maritime institutions and a guest lecturer on maritime security at Liverpool John Moores University.
